SINGAPORE: There is a shortage of heavy vehicle drivers in the manufacturing, logistics and construction sectors.

So the Workforce Development Agency (WDA) is starting a new programme next month to train more than 700 Singaporeans as Class 4 drivers.

Under the Train and Place (TnP) programme, companies will sponsor job seekers who already possess Class 3 driving licences to take up the training.

They will be hired as Class 4 drivers on completion of training and after passing the driving test.

WDA has set aside over $400,000 for the programme and will fund up to 90% of the training fees to encourage employers to take part.

It says it will also offer job placement assistance to companies which require Class 4 drivers by referring to them potential job seekers from the databases of NTUC CareerLink and the Community Development Councils (CDCs). - CNA/ir
