SINGAPORE: Law graduates holding Second Class Lower Division Honours degrees will now be able to practise law after two years of legal work experience.

Prior to this new rule, the Legal Profession Rules required that those with a Second Class Lower Honours, or equivalent, had to work three years in the legal sector in order to qualify.

Candidates who qualify under the scheme will have to apply to the Board of Legal Education for an exemption.

This change was recommended by the Committee to Develop the Singapore Legal Sector.

The committee released a slew of recommendations in 2007 aimed at enhancing the sector's manpower needs and building up legal services for the future. - CNA/vm
