SINGAPORE: Two Indian nationals will now serve their sentences for making false declarations of their educational qualifications in their Employment Pass (EP) applications.

The Ministry of Manpower said Ramasamy Alagu Pandian and his wife Alagu Pandian Latha had their appeals dismissed by the High Court.

Ramasamy had submitted a forged engineering diploma in his application. And for his wife, who is also an Indian national, he got her a forged Masters degree.

Ramasamy was sentenced to eight weeks' imprisonment last December for abetting his wife in her EP application using forged educational qualification. He was also fined S$4,000 for making a false declaration in his own EP application.

Latha was sentenced to two weeks' imprisonment for furnishing false information in her application.

They appealed against their sentences. But on 27 March, the High Court dismissed their appeals.

Under the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act, Ramasamy could have been fined up to S$15,000 or jailed for up to a year, or both.

The Manpower Ministry said employers and foreign workers who fail to notify it of false information submitted in their work pass applications, could also face a fine of up to S$5,000 or a jail term of up to six months, or both. - CNA/ir
