SINGAPORE: Police have commended 24-year-old Koh Chee Kaur for helping to nab a culprit who fled after robbing a woman at Block 341 Jurong East Avenue 1 on Thursday.

The suspect, a 34-year-old man, had followed his victim into the lift and taken her gold necklace worth S$1,000 by threatening her with a paper cutter.

He dropped the necklace and fled the scene when he was confronted by the woman's husband at the lift landing.

The couple then called the police and two officers arrived to find the suspect catching his breath at the staircase landing on the second floor. A chase quickly followed.

When Koh – who was cycling in the vicinity – saw what was happening, he instinctively joined in the chase.

He said: "I just followed my instincts and chased in the opposite direction. We came head on and he was just in front of me. I was afraid of hurting him so I steered a bit to the right and kicked him with my left leg. He rolled over and I fell off my bike. As I was about to pounce on him, the police officers managed to grab him."

The suspect was arrested and will be charged in court with armed robbery on Saturday. If convicted, he faces a minimum jail term of five years and at least 12 strokes of the cane.
