SINGAPORE : Singapore's first big drifting competition will be staged this weekend.

Formula Drift, which is being held outside North America for the first time, will be held at the Changi Exhibition Centre.

Some of the top drivers competing in the Singapore event tested the new circuit on Friday. They include the best drivers from Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan and the US.

A total of 41 cars will be competing for cash and other prizes like car accessories. Some 10,000 spectators are expected to watch the fast-paced action.

The sport has been popularised by movies and involves cars moving sideways.

Meanwhile, drifting looks set to "get a firm footing" in Singapore. A permanent racetrack is being built in Changi, just next to the Changi Exhibition Centre. - CNA/ms
