SINGAPORE : Traffic Police statistics showed there were 29 accidents involving school buses during the past three years, of which three were fatal.
Although there were no fatalities last year, 15 students were injured.
To lower the rate of accidents, the Singapore School Transport Association is proposing that the Land Transport Authority makes first aid training for school bus drivers compulsory.
Last year, over 60 of its members received such training from the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC). The training comprised basic first aid, child psychology, and teaching drivers how to handle emergencies.
The association is now more concerned about training, especially after the recent minibus accident that killed an 8-year-old boy.
"Alighting and boarding of buses is rather important. When the child boards the bus, we make sure that the child is seated (before) we drive off. When the child alights, we make sure that (he) is at a safe distance, then we go off," said Wong Ann Lin, chairman of the Singapore School Transport Association. - CNA
