SINGAPORE : The founding director of the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM), Dr Kenson Kwok, has decided to retire by the end of this year.

The 58-year-old said he wants to spend more time with his family and pursue his own interests.

Dr Kwok first joined the museum service as a Senior Curator in 1992. He was then tasked to set up ACM and became its director in 1994.

Under Dr Kwok, ACM's collection expanded to include South Asian and Islamic exhibits. He also helped raise cash and donations worth over S$32 million.

The National Heritage Board (NHB) said Dr Kwok's retirement comes slightly early but it accepts his reasons to step down.

The NHB said Dr Kwok will remain at his post until the end of the year to allow time for a worthy successor to be found. - CNA/ms
