SINGAPORE: After two extensions, voting on Myanmar's constitutional referendum at its embassy in Singapore ended on Friday.

According to embassy staff members, the ballots will be sent to Myanmar on Friday night. However, they were unable to provide details of the number of votes cast.

Channel NewsAsia's news team did not spot any last-minute voters about an hour before the 1pm deadline. An embassy worker said most of the Myanmar nationals in Singapore had cast their ballots earlier when voting started on 24 April.

Only a few people trickled in to vote after Cyclone Nargis hit their homeland last weekend.

Many of those spotted at the embassy on Friday told Channel NewsAsia that they were there to pay their income taxes in order to be allowed to enter Myanmar.

Its ambassador declined an interview, saying the embassy was busy co-ordinating aid offers and visa applications. - CNA/vm
