SINGAPORE : The law fraternity held a farewell dinner for former Law Minister Professor S Jayakumar on Monday evening.
It was attended by some 350 lawyers, judges and staff from the Attorney General's Chambers and Law Ministry.
Professor Jayakumar's successor, Mr K Shanmugam was also at the dinner. The two first met in the early 80s at a tutorial session, when Mr Shanmugam was a second year law student at the National University of Singapore.
The new law minister said Professor Jayakumar had given him plenty of advice.
Mr Shanmugam said: "What I remember is someone who paid a lot of attention to details, (and was) very careful, very clear, very precise. And the policies were always very carefully thought through. He had an answer to everything that people could ask, would ask, whether in the public or in Parliament."
Chan Sek Keong, Chief Justice, said: "I would mention that he was very concerned that our laws should incorporate fair and just legal norms, so our legal system is on a par with the best legal systems in the first world." - CNA/ms
