SINGAPORE: Another two men have died after taking illegal products that enhance their sexual performance. This brings the death toll to four so far this year.
The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) said the latest fatal cases involved a man in his 20s and another in his 50s. They had been in coma after consuming the illegal products.
In addition, another 22 new serious cases have been reported, of which two men are in coma.
HSA said there are 40 confirmed cases of men falling seriously ill after taking the drugs. Most of them are suffering from low blood sugar.
The drugs are likely to be the recently uncovered illegal sexual products such as Power 1 Walnut, fake Cialis, and "Santi Niu Bian" - which is also known as "Santi Bovine Penis Erecting Capsule".
These products contain unhealthy levels of medicine used to treat patients with diabetes and erectile dysfunction.
HSA said besides the confirmed cases, there are also 87 suspected cases. But the link cannot be established because the patients are reluctant to provide information on the products they have consumed.
The men involved are between 21 and 97 years old.
HSA strongly urged the public not to risk their lives and health by consuming such illegal products.
It also reminded consumers that all illegal products from dubious sources, including internet purchases, can contain undeclared potent substances that can cause serious harm and death. Even products of uncertain origin from friends and relatives are potentially risky. - CNA/ac
