SINGAPORE: Statistics from the traffic police showed that the number of overall accidents rose year-on-year over the past decade, from 5,636 in 1998 to 8,323 last year.

Figures also showed minor accidents accounted for the bulk of overall accidents.

The number of serious accidents, however, decreased from 270 in 1998 to 80 last year.

The number of fatal accidents hit a low of 170 in 2005, and hit a high of 214 last year. - CNA/ac
