SINGAPORE : Members of the Singapore Association of Plastic Surgeons and officials from the Health Ministry (MOH) held a meeting on Thursday night.
It is not clear what was decided at the meeting, but what is known is that they discussed the ministry's proposed regulations on conducting liposuction.
The regulations were issued in April and will determine how and where doctors may conduct the procedure.
The Association had written to MOH on June 13, calling for stricter measures in various areas.
These include a year of surgical training after housemanship for doctors who wish to perform aesthetic surgery.
The Association also wants the volume of fat collected during liposuction to be regulated.
The doctors are also against the Ministry's proposal to licence individual surgical procedures.
The Association said this is a "dangerous precedent to set" as it would "open a Pandora's Box".
It fears that licensing and legalising non-surgeons to perform such specialist surgical and lucrative procedures may entice general practitioners away from providing primary healthcare.
For now, both parties have declined to comment on their meeting on Thursday night. - CNA/ms
