SINGAPORE : Health Minister Khaw Boon said the regulations on liposuction procedures can never fully eliminate accidents, but it can serve to minimise it.

He was responding to questions on the Ministry of Health's liposuction rules, which some plastic surgeons have criticised as being too lax.

Speaking on the sidelines of a community event, Mr Khaw said the issue is a complex one and his ministry will have to make a judgement call. But what must be top priority is patient safety.

"All surgeries carry a risk - whether major or minor - so I think consumers have to take it carefully, and ask if you really need liposuction. Don't jump into the procedure; ask around and get a second opinion. There are other ways for achieving the same results, (such as) eating less and exercising more," said the health minister. - CNA /ls
