SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and President S R Nathan have written to Philippine President Gloria Arroyo to express sympathies over the devastation caused by Typhoon Frank.

The typhoon pounded central Philippines over the weekend, killing many and leaving thousands homeless.

In his letter to President Arroyo, PM Lee said he was deeply saddened to learn of the extensive damage and loss of lives. This includes the tragic news of the sinking of a passenger ferry in Visayas.

But Mr Lee said he is confident that through the Philippine government's prompt rescue and relief efforts, the families and friends of victims will find courage and strength to overcome the tragedy.

In his letter, President Nathan said he was particularly pained to learn of the sinking of the passenger ferry.

He expressed heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the families of the victims and those who have lost properties and livelihood from the disaster.
