SINGAPORE: A new course in training older workers on how to care for the elderly has been launched.

The Eldercare Training Programme is certified by the Workforce Development Agency under the Community and Social Services Workforce Skills Qualifications Programme.

Participants of the programme come from different fields such as security services and hospitality. There are also those who have cared for the elderly but never had any formal training.

51-year-old Joyce Yeo, who cared for her grandparents and parents shortly before they passed away, said she wants to improve her employment opportunities by attending the training programme.

"I had so many years of experience. But without a (certificate), when you come into the working world, it seems that they will ask you 'Do you have a cert?' Because (in) certain areas, you need... certain skills like CPR and handling a wheelchair. All these you have to learn. If you don't learn, you might hurt the client," she said.

The 35-day course will focus on hands-on experience. Participants will also be attached to an old aged home.
