SINGAPORE: Singapore leaders have extended their warmest wishes and birthday greetings to former president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, who turns 90 on Friday.
Singapore's President S R Nathan and Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong both sent letters congratulating Mr Mandela.
In his letter, Mr Nathan recounted his trip to Robben Island – the place where the freedom fighter was incarcerated.
He said Mr Mandela's "unremitting support of worthy causes continues to bring benefits to many people today".
Besides sending birthday greetings, Mr Goh also wrote about his fond memories of several meetings between them, especially during Mr Mandela's state visit to Singapore in 1997.
The senior minister expressed his wish to call on Mr Mandela when he visits South Africa next year.
