SINGAPORE: Security lapses in Singapore and organ trading are some issues members of parliament plan to raise when the House sits on Monday.

First, it was the escape of Mas Selamat Kastari, a Jemaah Islamiyah terrorist leader from a detention centre in Singapore in February. Then two detainees attempted to escape from the Subordinate Courts' lock-up on June 11. This was followed by a passport mix-up at the Singapore Changi Airport less than two weeks later, on Jun 23.

All these lapses have been a hot topic for Singaporeans, especially over the internet.

Dr Teo Ho Pin, Mayor of North West District, said he wants to bring the matter up to allow the Home Affairs Ministry to clarify and explain the lapses. In light of the emerging security threats, he also wants to know how the government intends to enhance security.

On Dr Teo's part, he will suggest follow-up measures such as improving the design of Singapore's security facilities to prevent future lapses.

The government will also be asked if it has any information on Mas Selamat's whereabouts and how to prevent complacency among national security personnel.

Ang Mo Kio GRC MP Lam Pin Min will ask the Ministry of Health whether it will consider legalising the ethical sale of organs in the near future. MPs will call for safeguards against illegal transactions.

The topic on organ trading emerged after two Indonesian men were convicted in Singapore recently for agreeing to sell their kidneys. The case against a well-known local retailer, who had allegedly offered to buy one of the kidneys, is still ongoing.

MPs have also picked up on a recent hot topic - electronic road pricing (ERP) -and questions will be put to the Transport Ministry on whether ERP prices should be frozen until the cost of living is more stable.

Jurong GRC MP Halimah Yacob will be also be asking the government how it can get women to continue to work and still have children. - CNA/vm
