SINGAPORE: Public esteem for the charity organisation, Ren Ci Hospital and MediCare Centre, may have plummeted in recent months due to the court proceedings against its former CEO - Venerable Shi Ming Yi - for forgery and abuse of funds, but many of its volunteers remain unfazed by the controversy.

Ngoo Siong Kie has been a volunteer at the Ren Ci Hospital for three years now. She whips up her special brew every Friday and spends quality time with the residents.

She and fellow volunteers are aware of the controversy surrounding the medical establishment, but remain steadfast in their commitment to it. They press on because they enjoy what they do and have the support of their families.

The hospital has close-knit volunteer corps of about 350, who actively help in the daily running of the facility.

It has over 300 employees, three-quarters of whom are medical personnel. Channel NewsAsia understands that none have quit the organisation so far. - CNA/vm
