SINGAPORE: Another major conference will soon roll into town, this time with a focus on addressing energy concerns.

Following the success of the International Water Week in June, Singapore will play host to the inaugural International Energy Week from November 3-7.

The five-day event will bring together policy makers, academics and industry players to discuss and find solutions to energy issues faced by countries.

Areas up for discussion include the exploration of sustainable energy sources and technology, and the integration of energy solutions in cities.

The annual event is jointly organised by the Energy Market Authority (EMA) and the Energy Studies Institute.

EMA's chief executive, Khoo Chin Hean, said on Friday that Energy Week is timely as the global energy landscape is changing rapidly. He said: "In the area of energy, the world is moving into a point where there are conflicting needs.

"On the one hand, you need to use more energy, but on the other hand, the use of more energy in a world which is weathered to fossil fuels will create concerns over climate change.

"Now, if you want to bring these two together, to find solutions, it creates risk, but at the same time, it also creates emerging opportunities."

Khoo said Singapore must take a pro-active and innovative approach to energy, as it is a small country. He added that solutions like hydro- and geo-thermic powers are available to large countries, but cannot be applied to Singapore.

About 2,500 delegates from around the world are expected to attend the event.
