SINGAPORE : Local supermarket chain I-Tec has become the first company to be prosecuted here for selling banned Chinese dairy products.

It has been slapped with two charges under the Sale of Food Act for carrying the made-in-China "Dutch Lady" brand of strawberry flavoured milk, which was found to be tainted with melamine.

The items were allegedly found in the Serangoon and Balestier Road outlets of I-Tec Supermart.

If convicted, I-Tec faces a fine up of to S$5,000 on each charge. The case will be mentioned again on November 11.

Singapore authorities have imposed a blanket ban on dairy products from China since September 19. - CNA/ms
