PUNE: Singapore has won a gold and a silver at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India.

Aqilah Sudhir secured Singapore's first gold medal in the Women's 10-metre Air Rifle event on Monday. She led the pack with a final score of 501 points.

Singapore's second medal, a silver, was won in the Men's 10-metre Air Pistol by Christopher John Chia Sim Chen with a final score of 555 points.

Chia came in just two points behind Canada's Matthew James Hendry who took gold with a final score of 557.

The Team Singapore contingent is made up of 16 athletes aged 14 to 18 years old. They are competing for top honours in four sports - athletics, shooting, swimming and table tennis.

The Commonwealth Youth Games began on October 12 and the athletes will be in Pune until October 18.

Over 1,300 athletes and 350 officials from 71 countries are participating in nine disciplines - athletics, badminton, boxing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, tennis, weightlifting and wrestling.

This is the first Commonwealth Youth Games to be held in Asia. - CNA /ls
