SINGAPORE: Singapore's latest research and development hub, Fusionopolis, is staging a week-long festival as part of its official opening, which was held last Friday.
The latest inventions are showcased at FusionWorld - a place where researchers are not just innovating but also coming up with products that can be marketed.
One such innovation is called the Brain Computer Interface.
It is a system that helps people access the computer through their thoughts and is useful for rehabilitation of stroke patients.
This is just one of many innovations on display at FusionWorld, aimed at allowing researchers to display what is possible and inspire others to do the same.
Chairman of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Lim Chuan Poh, said, "We have a team of people that is constantly thinking (about) how to innovate in terms of creating interesting platforms of collaboration with industry. One thing that is important is our research scientists and leaders spend time thinking of what the industry needs."
Another invention - a large-scale interactive display using a webcam and a laser pointer - is something schools will probably explore with A*STAR.
The invention allows students to save time spent on taking notes during lectures.
A researcher at A*STAR, Kevin Veragoo, said, "If you have a virtual whiteboard and the teacher is writing with a laser pointer, what we can do is record everything that she wrote as a movie file.
"The teacher can let the students know in advance so that they do not copy anything, and they can focus on what the teacher is explaining. And at the end of class, the teacher passes the movie file (to the students)."
While the work at FusionWorld is targeted at potential collaborators, A*STAR is also planning to hold educational tours for students through its outreach programmes.
