SINGAPORE: While Singapore may have been the first country to introduce road pricing to ease congestion in 1975, few people realised that the roots of the scheme were in a report submitted to the UK government as far back as 1964.

Going forward, Transport Minister Raymond Lim said the current Electronic Road Pricing system will continue to be refined by studying the experiences of other cities like London and Stockholm.

Mr Lim was speaking at the launch on Tuesday of the inaugural World Urban Transport Leaders Summit, where about a hundred high level planners from 30 countries shared their transport problems and ideas.

Mr Lim also officially opened the new premises of the LTA Academy, which is an institution established two years ago to exchange ideas and expertise.
