SINGAPORE: The Manpower Ministry (MOM) has resolved the salary dispute involving 48 Bangladeshi shipyard workers.

In late September this year, MOM received complaints from the workers that they did not have work and were not paid their salaries over a long time.

The ministry found out that the workers had in fact been sent for training because their skills did not meet those required by the shipyards. During these intermittent periods, they were not paid their full salaries.

Upon MOM's intervention, the companies – San's Marine Engineering Service, Han's Marine Pte Ltd and K7 Engineering Pte Ltd – have since paid the workers their salaries, including those for periods of training.

The ministry's investigations also revealed that many of the workers paid their Bangladesh agents a sum of money as security deposits for their job placements in Singapore.

It has forwarded the names of these agents to the Bangladesh Embassy for their further investigation and action.
