SINGAPORE: It's the beginning of a new school year on Friday, but the ongoing economic slowdown has forced some parents to cut back on buying new school gear for their children.

Some budget-conscious parents have also chosen to buy what is needed instead of spending on extras.

Jacklyn Teo, a backpacks and shoes retailer, said: "Last year, they could buy two pairs of shoes, but this year, I think they could only buy one pair or use the old one."

In general, retailers said sales of back-to-school products have dropped by an average of 20 per cent this year, mainly due to parents cutting back on household spending.

Some parents are even buying used school textbooks which may be half the price of new ones.

Stores selling second-hand items have seen sales go up by at least 10 per cent this year.

Leng Xiujing, Evernew Book Store, said: "The economy is not very good nowadays. Therefore, parents would like to save more money. Instead of spending on new books, they can come and get second-hand books."
