SINGAPORE : Singapore's Agri-food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) has said Mars Petcare, the parent company of Nutro brand products, has initiated a voluntary recall of select varieties of Nutro cat food.

And as a precautionary measure, AVA has directed the importer of the affected products to recall them with immediate effect.

AVA said there was a production error by one of its US-based premix supplier which resulted in excessive levels of zinc and under-supplemented potassium in some of the products.

Cat owners who bought the affected Nutro cat food products are advised to stop feeding them to their cats immediately and to monitor their cats for symptoms of loss of appetite, weight loss and vomiting.

AVA added that if the cat is sick or shows any of these symptoms, owners should bring their cat to see their veterinarian for treatment and advice.

Products that are affected by the recall include the Nutro® Natural Choice® Complete Care® and Nutro®Max® dry cat foods with "best before" dates between May 12, 2010 and August 22, 2010. - CNA/ms
