SINGAPORE: Nanyang Technological University (NTU) alumni donated RMB1 million (about S$210,500) to repair and expand a primary school damaged in last year's Sichuan earthquake.
In recognition of the financial support, NTU president Dr Su Guaning and alumni members attended a renaming ceremony of the Shuangdong Nanyang Primary School on Sunday.
Last July, alumni of the Nanyang Executive Master in Business Administration (EMBA) (Chinese) set up the Love and Care Fund for Education. The fund's donation will pay for repairs and help improve teaching standards and management of the school.
Dr Su Guaning said: "We will be sharing with the principal and teachers the latest management philosophies, with the hope of upgrading the management and pedagogy in the primary school. We eagerly await the day Shuangdong Nanyang Primary School becomes the model school in Deyang and even in the whole of Sichuan province."
Located in the Jingyang district of Deyang city (Sichuan), the primary school is a public, full-day school for children of local farmers and immigrant farmhands, under a voluntary rural education scheme.
It currently has 10 classes and 318 students. But the school will be expanded to accommodate 12 classes for up to 540 students.
The school is about one and a half hours' drive from Chengdu.
On Saturday, NTU's Nanyang Business School held its biennial Business Forum in Chengdu for the first time.
Two hundred NTU alumni attended the forum which focused on "The New World Economic Order and its Implications for Businesses".
The forum aims to foster dialogue and exchange of views between academics, government and industry leaders, and other professionals on major issues affecting businesses and corporations in the rapidly growing western region of China and beyond.
