SINGAPORE : Singapore won a bronze medal in football at the last SEA Games in 2007. But winning a medal might be an uphill task for the boys at this year's Games.
That is because the current team players have only been together for a year and include just two players from the 2007 batch.
The Young Lions have two months to go before the football competition kicks off in Laos. And the pressure is on because the team is currently second from the bottom in the S.League.
The Under-23 SEA Games competition will be the players' biggest test as they lack experience and have an average age of 19.
Two teenage players from the Sports School could boost the team. Eighteen-year-old Madhu Mohana and 17-year-old Muhammad Safuwan joined mid-season. Both are eager to prove themselves, and hopefully don Singapore colours at the SEA Games.
The final selection will be carried out in late November and a few tune-up matches have been lined up for the boys, as the Football Association plans for the long term.
The team's coach said that including young players in the squad is vital for the development of the sport.
Terry Pathmanathan said: "If you think of results, then of course you will go for all the good ones who are 22 years old or 23 years old... And where does that lead us if we want to talk about future supply and all that." - CNA/ms
