SINGAPORE : Air quality in Singapore has improved slightly overnight, but it remains in the moderate range.
The Pollution Standards Index (PSI) reading stood at 54 as of 4pm on Thursday, after hitting a September high of 64 on Wednesday.
But with dryer than normal weather expected ahead due to the El Nino phenomenon, Environment & Water Resources Minister Yaacob Ibrahim warned that Singapore might see levels similar to 2006, when PSI readings hit nine-year record highs.
The haze has also raised concerns among organisers of the upcoming Formula One night race.
But Dr Yaacob said tackling the problem is a joint effort among ASEAN countries.
He said: "We have impressed upon our colleagues in the region that there are international events, that if we don't do something about it, the international community will put a spotlight on us and it doesn't look good, not only for Singapore but for the rest of the region...
"I hope my colleagues in Indonesia and the rest of the ASEAN community can do their part." - CNA /ls
