SINGAPORE: It is now official. SingTel issued a statement on Tuesday saying it had submitted a bid to the Premier League for the rights to broadcast England's top-flight football matches for three seasons, starting with the 2010/2011 campaign.
Less than an hour after SingTel's announcement, current rights holder StarHub, whose three-year contract with the Premier League expires at the end of the current season in May, said it had also submitted its bid.
SingTel lost the bidding war to StarHub in 2007.
Both telcos refused to confirm or deny they would share the rights.
A bidding war could spike the cost of watching English Premier League (EPL) matches live on cable television.
The cost of StarHub's TV sports package tripled within three years, from S$8 a month in 2004 to S$25 a month in 2007, after reports suggested it had paid the Premier League US$150 million to outbid SingTel.
The price hikes have been a sore point for football fans.
Research company TV Sports Markets claimed in May that Singapore is the EPL's second-most-lucrative overseas territory worldwide, after Hong Kong. TODAY/vm
