SINGAPORE: The Land Transport Authority (LTA) on Wednesday announced an extension for the replacement of EZ-link cards.

The one-for-one free replacement of the EZ-link cards will continue for another week until October 7.

LTA said it decided on the extension because of the long queues which snaked from TransitLink ticket offices in the last few days by commuters trying to beat the original deadline, which was on Wednesday.

Chua Chong Kheng, director of Rail, Thomson & Existing Lines, at Land Transport Authority said: "There's a number of stations with a fairly high volume of commuters still using the old ez-link cards. In order not to disrupt operations at the stations, we have decided to grant them an extra 7 days so that they can exchange the cards for free.

"But we have to emphasise that this 7-day (extension) is an absolute period, there will be no extension after this."

Despite the extension, the old cards cannot be used on buses and trains with effect from Thursday.

The replacement exercise started in January and the LTA said that as of last Sunday, 4.4 million cards had been changed.

It has estimated that commuters are still holding on to about 3.6 million old EZ-link cards.
