SINGAPORE: Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong made a telephone call to Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Friday evening.

Mr Lee conveyed his sympathies for the victims of the earthquake that struck West Sumatra on Wednesday evening and told the president that Singapore has despatched a 42-man rescue contingent, along with US$50,000 of emergency supplies, to support Indonesia's rescue and recovery efforts.

He added that Singapore is ready to render further help to Indonesia if needed. The prime minister also thanked the president for Indonesian rescue workers' help in freeing Singaporean John Lee from the rubble of a hotel.

During the phone call, President Yudhoyono briefed Mr Lee on Indonesia's response to the devastating earthquake and the ground situation in the disaster area.

He also thanked Mr Lee for Singapore's offer of assistance and support.
