SINGAPORE: The fire at the Kampong Siglap Mosque on Marine Parade Road has been put out, and efforts are being made to "damp down" the still simmering site.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said at about 5pm that some 30 firefighters are working with water jets to cool down the site of the fire, which had burned for about two hours.
The roof of the building has collapsed.
Eyewitnesses told Channel NewsAsia that the fire was believed to have started in a corner of the prayer hall. When it went out of control, the people in the mosque were evacuated.
SCDF said there were about 150 people in the mosque at that time.
A 40-year-old man was injured, suffering cuts when he fell during the evacuation. He was sent to Changi General Hospital.
Viewers who called the MediaCorp hotline said they heard a "bang" when the fire broke out on Tuesday afternoon, and said that the area was enveloped in thick smoke.
A resident said that nearby apartments have been evacuated.
The mosque is near Victoria School.
