SINGAPORE: The Media Development Authority (MDA) has asked SingTel to provide clarity on the pricing of their sports packages following its successful bid for the English Premier League for three seasons starting next year.
In a statement, MDA noted that SingTel has committed to not charging more than what cable subscribers are currently paying and ensuring 100 per cent rollout to all households by the time the season starts in 2010.
StarHub has also said it will not be charging any early termination fees for subscribers of sports packages who cancel their service after July next year.
With SingTel winning the EPL bid, members of the public have voiced concerns over possible higher charges as well as the hassle of using multiple set-up boxes.
MDA said it understands the concerns raised, stressing that its goal remains to find an effective solution that works best in the Singapore context.
MDA said the bidding process is a commercial one with terms determined by the Football Association Premier League and agreed upon with the bidders.
It added that dialogue sessions were held with the industry on possible regulatory interventions to address this issue in the long term even before the bidding. - 938LIVE/vm
