SINGAPORE : The Singapore National Eye Centre has teamed up with voluntary welfare organisation Lions Clubs International in an effort to reduce blindness among Singaporeans.
Some 200 people had their eyes screened on Sunday as part of the Lions World Sight Day.
They were given general eye checks and tested for diabetic eye disease.
Diabetic retinopathy is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness in Singapore. Other preventable causes of blindness here are cataract and glaucoma.
Some 7,000 people are referred to the eye centre every year with diabetic retinopathy. And doctors there expect to see more cases as the country's population ages.
The Lions World Sight Day is a global initiative and is aimed at preventing blindness.
The World Health Organisation estimates there are 40 million blind people in the world and this number could double over the next 25 years. - CNA/ms
