SINGAPORE : Singapore has welcomed the move by both INTERPOL and the United Nations (UN) to enter into a strategic partnership to promote state stability, and global law and order.
The two international agencies signed a formal agreement on Sunday at the INTERPOL-UN Ministerial meeting which is being held in Singapore.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Prime Minister and Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng said it bodes well in the fight against crime and terrorism.
Mr Wong said that by entering into the partnership, INTERPOL brings with it the backing of 187 member countries and their collective experience and resources.
This includes training and operational technical databases to enhance the roles of civilian police in peace building operations.
Mr Wong added that the UN on its part, with its substantial operational experience gained from deploying civilian police, is well placed to identify the challenges civilian police would face and the resources needed to better equip them.
He said countries around the world have recognised the global dimensions of their local problems and the need to work with other partners.
Mr Wong said: "Hence, many seek bilateral cooperation agreements with their neighbours and form regional and international networks to work out solutions. Singapore is amongst those that have undoubtedly benefited from regional and international cooperation." - CNA/ms
