HUA HIN, Thailand: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has warned that ASEAN risks becoming marginalised if it does not stay relevant.

Speaking during the ASEAN leaders retreat on Saturday morning, he said it was vital for the grouping to strengthen cooperation, deepen integration and enable all its member countries to develop and prosper.

This is why ASEAN is pursuing the Connectivity Masterplan to enhance trade, investment and tourism development.

Mr Lee added that ASEAN should also act in a coordinated manner internationally.

He noted that it is good that the ASEAN Chair and the Secretary General were invited for the G20 meeting in addition to Indonesia as this gave ASEAN a precious seat at the deliberations.

Mr Lee added that ASEAN must take part actively and constructively at the G20 to ensure that the grouping's interests are safeguarded. - CNA/ms
