SINGAPORE : Drivers turned up in droves at some Shell petrol stations to snap up a special one-day deal.

The petrol company was offering its new FuelSave petrol at S$1 per litre on Saturday. But the overwhelming response triggered traffic jams in some areas.

Queues started forming at some Shell stations from 10am.

At one station along Toa Payoh Lorong 1, drivers said the prospect of having to wait did not deter them as they wanted to realise some 45 per cent worth of cost-savings.

Yet in all the excitement, many were not too sure why Shell was offering the rare deal.

One driver said: "I am not sure what is the objective but because of the discount, it is very attractive, it makes a lot of difference."

Another commented: "I waited for about 45 minutes. But since it is for a full tank, it is all worth it."

Shell said the initiative was to remind drivers about the importance of fuel efficiency. Fuel saving booklets were also handed out to drivers.

Henry Chu, General Manager of Retail Sales and Operation, Shell, said: "We do not directly claim that it is going to help CO2, but efficiency will reduce the amount of CO2 emissions, so with every full tank that they pump, they save a litre."

Shell deployed 150 Cisco guards at almost all its stations to ensure a smooth flow of traffic. Still, some callers to MediaCorp's hotline reported traffic jams in Tampines, Novena and Serangoon Garden areas.

Another caller also said there was a computer glitch at a Shell station in Alexandra. Shell said the station was the only one affected and that the problem was resolved within 30 minutes. Affected drivers were directed to another station nearby.

The promotion ended at 6pm on Saturday. - CNA/ms
