SINGAPORE: The Singapore arts scene remained resilient last year despite the economic downturn.

The National Arts Council said that despite the downturn, there was a 10 per cent increase in arts-related activities last year.

The number of exhibitions, for one, increased 14 per cent. They were largely staged by art galleries, with 40 new players entering the scene last year.

The total number of ticketed and non-ticketed performances dropped by eight per cent.

However, the NAC said the slide was still less than the 10 per cent decline in 2003 during the Asian financial crisis and SARS outbreak.

Overall, ticketed performances attracted 1.54 million attendees.

The statistics showed that one in three Singaporeans is interested in the arts in general.
