SINGAPORE: The National Council of Social Service (NCSS) will take on a new role as the central enabler and advocate for Voluntary Welfare Organisations (VWOs).

Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Vivian Balakrishnan made the announcement during the 8th NCSS Members' Conference on Thursday morning.

Dr Balakrishnan said the move, which takes effect next year, will allow NCSS to achieve economies of scale and also provide training opportunities to the staff of VWOs.

He added that this will help NCSS further prepare the social service sector to increase the reach of services to target groups. It will also put NCSS in good stead as it meets new social challenges.

With the new function, NCSS will relinquish its role in overseeing charities and Institutions of a Public Character (IPCs).

The Charities Unit under the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports will take over that responsibility. More than 300 charities and 200 IPCs will be reporting directly to the unit.
