SINGAPORE - For students who fancy a whiff of this, the region's first Diploma in Perfumery and Cosmetic Science will be introduced at the Singapore Polytechnic next year.
With five of the world's top 10 flavour and fragrance houses based in the Republic, the multi-disciplinary course at its School of Chemical and Life Sciences will help feed rising demand for skilled talent.
The beauty industry here, which now rakes in $120 million a year, is projected to grow by 30 per cent annually.
Course modules will cover formulation and product development, eventually leading to the commercialisation of new products in the market.
Four other new diploma courses will also be on offer from April, including two in the high-growth, high-demand area of digital media technology.
The Diploma in Digital Animation focuses on computer-generated effects and comes with a 17-week overseas internship with renowned production teams; while the Diploma in Visual Effects and Motion Graphics centres on 3D animation and includes access to a new 3D studio - complete with rigs, harnesses and green screens.
Also new is a Diploma in Materials Science, with special emphasis on areas such as green technology, nanotechnology, biomaterials and aerospace materials. Students get to go on local and overseas industrial attachments with industry bigwigs such as REC and ExxonMobil.
The Diploma in International Business gives students training in cross-cultural and cross-regional business transactions, with students required to learn a foreign language.
Course modules were formulated after a rigorous, year-long consultation with stakeholders, companies and prospective students, said the polytechnic. For more information, log on to www.sp.edu.sg. - TODAY/rs
