SINGAPORE: Out of the 90 athletes who participated in the recent Asian Youth Games, the 26 who won medals were given something extra for their efforts on Saturday – sports scholarships by NTUC FairPrice Foundation.

The recipients received their scholarships from Deputy Prime Minister and president of the Singapore National Olympic Council Teo Chee Hean.

Top honours went to swimmer Quah Ting Wen who received S$16,250. Ting Wen was not at the event as she was preparing for her O-levels. She was also named the "Female Athlete of the Games".

Bowler New Hui Fen, was next and received a total of S$16,000.

FairPrice sponsored S$108,250 for the scholarships. The funds are aimed at helping the athletes offset their training expenditure from the buying of equipment to the hiring of coaches.
