Half-height screen doors on elevated MRT stations to be installed by 2012

SINGAPORE : Half-height platform screen doors have been installed at Pasir Ris MRT station to help prevent people from falling onto the tracks.

This is the first station to feature such safety enhancements.

Installation began in August this year and took several months to complete because work could only be carried out at night when the trains were not running.

Deputy Prime Minister and Adviser to Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, Teo Chee Hean, launched the doors on Sunday.

Next month, platform doors will also operate at Jurong East and Yishun stations. And by 2012, they will be installed in all 36 above-ground MRT stations in Singapore.

The entire project will cost over S$120 million. - CNA/ms
