400 people recognised for contributions to Singapore

SINGAPORE : Some 400 people were recognised for their contributions to Singapore at the National Day Investiture 2009 ceremony on Sunday evening.

Receiving the top award from President S R Nathan was Fock Siew Wah.

The Group Chairman of PSA International was conferred the Distinguished Service Order for helming one of the largest port operators in the world.

Mr Fock was also recognised for transforming Singapore's public transport sector as the Land Transport Authority's first Chairman from 1995 to 2002.

Ho Kwon Ping was one of six recipients of the Meritorious Service Medal.

The founding Chairman of Singapore Management University was recognised for his contributions to tertiary education.

Under his stewardship, the number of students has grown from 306 in 2000 to the current cohort of some 6,000.

He was also recognised for growing MediaCorp into a leading Asian broadcaster since becoming Chairman in 2004. - CNA/ms
