SINGAPORE : Christmas along Orchard Road this year is going to be a fashionable affair.

Expect to see traditional Christmas icons, like Santa Claus, decked out in fashionable outfits, like a pair of tight trendy leggings.

This year's light-up on Orchard Road is themed "A Christmas All Decked Out" and showcases fashion as one of the key elements of the famous road in Singapore.

Over at Marina Bay, visitors will get a waterfront treat with oceanic design elements like waves and giant clam shells.

After 26 years, this is the first time the shopping centres are decorating their own precincts. And the Singapore Tourism Board is looking to give them a larger role in the years to come.

Sng Ngoi May, chairman of Orchard Road Business Association, said: "We are very honoured and very excited. We felt we had come of age, and that we could take on a role like that.

"Going forward, the tourism board is hoping we can take on a bigger role. We will lead it, but of course we will always need the tourism board to support us."

The streets of Orchard Road and the Marina Bay area will light up for eight weeks from this Saturday, in time for visiting APEC delegates. - CNA /ls
