SINGAPORE : The Singapore Network Information Centre (SGNIC), the national registry for domain names, will begin accepting initial registrations for Chinese domain names for websites from November 23.
The centre's general manager, Lim Choon Sai, said he believes the move is timely.
There is growing interest, especially among businesses, to reach the Chinese markets, which may feel more comfortable using their own language, he said.
The launch of Chinese domain names follows a slew of new domain name choices offered here in the past two years, including the release of single-character and numeric-only domain names.
Global Internet regulator, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), approved the move on Friday to allow Internet addresses to be written in non-English characters, including Arabic, Korean, Japanese and Chinese. - CNA /ls
