SINGAPORE : Three scientists have received research and salary funding under the Singapore Translational Research Investigator (STaR) awards.

The three scientists are the second batch of recipients.

One of them is Professor Teh Bin Tean from the National Cancer Centre.

Professor Teh is one of the world's leading kidney cancer research scientists and a pioneer in molecular profiling of kidney cancer.

He is looking into decoding the mechanism of drug resistance to improve the management of the cancer by doctors. The ultimate aim is to create customised treatments for patients.

Another recipient is Professor H. Phillip Koeffler from the National University Health System. He is focusing on the development of cancer research and education for young investigators in Singapore.

The third recipient, Professor David Bruce Matchar from the Duke-NUS graduate medical school, will look into clinical practice improvement from the development of clinical policies to their implementation in real world clinical settings. - CNA /ls
