SINGAPORE: Singapore's first Olympic medal was in weightlifting - with Tan Howe Liang winning a silver at the 1960 Rome Olympics.

And now, as the Singapore Weightlifting Federation gears up for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games (YOG), there are plans to lift the sport to new heights.

With a new facility at Jalan Benaan Kapal, set up with assistance from the Singapore Sports Council, the federation plans to expand its base of athletes for the YOG.

Tom Liaw, president, Singapore Weightlifting Federation said: "It is definitely going to be very useful for us because it will actually help us in the long-term planning of the training programme of our athletes for development as well.

"At the moment, we have just one girl and two boys, but we are looking at having at least 5 girls and 5 boys to actually select from."

The past two decades has seen the sport on the decline, but new blood - like 16-year old Jamie Wee, who aims to represent Singapore at the YOG next year - are all pumped up.

Wee and four others had competed at the Commonwealth Junior and Senior Championships, held from October 18 to 23, in Penang.
