SINGAPORE: A woman accused of feeding arsenic-laced food to her husband had submitted a statement to the police in November last year, admitting that she had given poison to him.
67-year-old Fong Quay Sim had made the confession to the investigating officer handling the case.
Station Inspector Shaik Faisal Shaik Abdul Kader Ali had informed her that someone had deliberately given poison to her husband, Chan Tin Sun, based on the arsenic found in his blood.
In response to this, SI Shaik Faisal said Fong then admitted that she had poisoned her 70-year-old husband and that she was angry with Mr Chan.
Fong then proceeded to write a five-page statement in English after the officer handed her a pen and some paper. In it, she claimed that Mr Chan had beat her up and she was so stressed that she put what she referred to as "anti-ant" into his food.
She then signed the confession, which was later typed out by SI Shaik Faisal. However, Fong's lawyer, Looi Wan Hui, said on Friday his client was coerced to make the confession.
Mr Looi said Fong was told that if she were to admit that she had poisoned Mr Chan, the authorities would help her get off with a warning.
SI Shaik Faisal denied this, saying that at no time did he issue threats or make any promises to Fong. He added that the accused also signed the statements voluntarily.
Fong had allegedly poisoned Mr Chan between 2004 and 2005. If convicted, she could be jailed up to ten years and fined.
