SINGAPORE: Singapore Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan on Sunday praised the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) on its Kidney Live Donor Support Programme.

The organisation has created a S$10 million fund to help donors offset post-transplant medical costs.

Mr Khaw said the programme encourages Singaporeans and permanent residents to step forward as donors by offering some financial assistance.

NKF received its first application for the fund on Wednesday from a man who is donating his kidney to his wife.

The transplant operation will take place this week.

"I think what we want to do is to go all out to make sure that the kind donor, the sole kidney that he or she has left, is kept in the best conditions," said Mr Khaw. "So this means very regular screening, monitoring of their health by the doctor, and all those cost money."
